Description

The Rolex Submariner Ref. 5508, produced between 1958 and 1962, stands among the most coveted vintage dive watches ever made. Known as the “Small Crown Submariner”, it features a 37 mm stainless steel case without crown guards, fitted with a 5.3 mm Brevet crown, giving it a clean and elegant silhouette. The hallmark black gilt dial — characterized by gold-printed text and minute track beneath a glossy lacquer finish — exudes warmth and depth, a signature of 1950s Rolex craftsmanship. Early versions display the “Submariner” designation alone, while later examples include depth ratings such as “100m = 330ft”. The rotating black aluminum bezel with red triangle at zero, and the domed plexiglass crystal, enhance its classic tool-watch aesthetic. Inside beats the Caliber 1530 automatic movement, ensuring reliable performance for its era. Fitted originally with a riveted Oyster bracelet (Ref. 7206), the 5508 remains a grail piece — admired for its gilt-dial luminosity, balanced proportions, and role as a bridge between the earliest Submariners and the modern generation.
