The Patek Philippe 3970E Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is one of the most iconic and celebrated grand complications in modern watchmaking. Introduced in 1986 and produced until the early 2000s, it combines two of Patek Philippe’s most prestigious complications — the perpetual calendar and the column-wheel chronograph — in a perfectly balanced 36mm case available in precious metals such as yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, and platinum.

The watch features a beautifully symmetrical dial layout: day and month apertures at 12 o’clock, moonphase and date subdial at 6 o’clock, running seconds and 24-hour indicator at 9 o’clock, and chronograph minutes at 3 o’clock. Depending on the version, the dial can be silver, opaline, or slate, with applied baton hour markers or diamond indexes.

Inside beats the prestigious Caliber CH 27-70 Q, a hand-wound movement based on the Lemania 2310 and extensively reworked by Patek Philippe. It includes a column-wheel chronograph, perpetual calendar mechanism, moonphase display, and provides a power reserve of approximately 58–60 hours. The movement is beautifully finished with Geneva stripes, polished anglage, and is visible through a sapphire display back (with optional solid caseback).

The “E” in 3970E stands for “Étanche” (water-resistant), indicating the updated, screw-down caseback compared to earlier 3970 references.

The watch is completed with a hand-stitched alligator leather strap and a Patek Philippe deployant buckle, exuding understated elegance and timeless sophistication
