The Rolex GMT-Master reference 6542 “Bakelite Gilt” is the very first GMT-Master ever produced, launched in 1954 in collaboration with Pan Am Airways to serve professional pilots during the golden age of aviation. This reference laid the foundation for all GMT-Master models that followed.

Its defining feature is the two-tone red and blue Bakelite bezel insert, made from an early transparent plastic with luminous numerals embedded beneath the surface — a technical and aesthetic hallmark that gives the watch its unmistakable character. The gilt dial, with its glossy black surface and golden print, further accentuates the vintage charm and depth of the piece.

Powered by the automatic Caliber 1036, the 6542 introduced Rolex’s dual time zone function through the addition of a 24-hour hand and a rotatable bezel. The 38 mm stainless steel case retains the clean, crown-guard-free profile of early Rolex sport models, exuding purity and balance.

This particular example is described as being in near-new condition, an exceedingly rare state for a 1950s GMT-Master, especially considering the fragile nature of the Bakelite bezel.
