The Rolex Datejust ref. 1603 is one of the most recognizable vintage references from Rolex’s Datejust line, embodying the elegance and reliability that have defined the collection since its introduction in 1945. Produced between the 1960s and early 1980s, the 1603 is distinguished by its 36 mm stainless steel Oyster case paired with an engine-turned steel bezel, giving it a more understated and versatile look compared to the fluted white gold bezels of its siblings.

The watch features a variety of dial configurations, including silver, black, grey, and champagne tones, often with baton or Roman numeral hour markers. At 3 o’clock sits the iconic date window, magnified by the Cyclops lens integrated into the acrylic crystal, ensuring excellent readability.

Inside, the 1603 was fitted with two important Rolex automatic movements over its production span: the Calibre 1565 (early models, with a 18,000 vph beat rate and ~42-hour power reserve) and later the Calibre 1575 (with a higher 19,800 vph frequency and hacking seconds). Both calibres are celebrated for their durability, precision, and role in shaping Rolex’s reputation for technical excellence.

The watch was offered on both the Oyster bracelet and the more formal Jubilee bracelet, both in stainless steel, secured with a folding clasp. With water resistance ensured by the Oyster case and screw-down crown, the Datejust 1603 was as practical as it was stylish.
